December 7.

Kyle opened his eyes.

“Finally awake, are we?”

Mel stood over him. Chloe was gone. “How long was I asleep?”

Now she was wearing a red cocktail dress instead of an orange one. “You slept all damn day.”

He sat up. “I want to apologize for being such an imposition.”

“Enough,” she said. “We need to talk. I’m heading to work soon, but we have time now. I tried talking with that albino girl, but I didn’t get far. You, at least, can keep up with a conversation.”

They went down to the bar where Jazmine was tending and sat down. “Two bloody margaritas, Jaz.”

“Anything for you, Cocoa.”

Jazmine served them red drinks. “Bloody” was very much an apt description of them. “This is a special drink just for our undead customers.”

Mel got the conversation started. “Here’s the deal, kid. You come in off the street and ask us to help save the world. But we don’t even know you. And it’s a religious war you want to stop. Now, Jaz and I aren’t religious. At all. Churchgoers have made it quite clear we aren’t their kind of people. You know how many times we’ve turned on the TV and seen news coverage of so-called Christians holding signs that say ‘God Hates Fags’? That’s not exactly endearing to us.”

Lately, Kyle had been forced to face the dark side of his religion. “I know Christianity has a lot of problems. We don’t always act the way we should. But it’s not just Christians that are in danger here. Kyrios is trying to drag Muslims into his war as well.”

She snickered. “Muslims? The guys who have the prayer ‘Thank Allah I wasn’t born a woman’?”

“Well…”

“You’ll have to do better than that, Sour Cream, if you want to convince Cocoa,” Jazmine said.

“All right, look,” Kyle said. “This war won’t stop at just those two religions. Fanatics on both sides will target anyone they think is the enemy faith. I’ve studied history. In times of war, people get paranoid. They strike at anyone who could be an enemy. And if this happens, vampires will be a prime target. People who only come out at night? That’ll be seen as suspicious.”

“You have a point,” Mel said. “But if this war happens, the Vatican could be crippled. That means no more Redeemers hunting us.”

He had the upper hand here, and he wasn’t afraid to leverage that. “Yes, but everyone could begin hunting you. You probably don’t believe in Hell, but that’s what the world will become if Kyrios has his way.” He didn’t know if he still believed in Hell, but he figured it was good imagery to use. His faith was currently frail like a spider’s web.

Mel shrugged. “Fair enough. But how do I know if any of this is true? How do I know you and that Brit didn’t make it up? I need to know the person behind the story. Tell me about yourself.”

“Not a whole lot to tell. I grew up in a super Christian family. We’ve all been, you know, active in our church.
